Three Years Ago

Three years ago today we adopted our first greyhound.  I never could have imagined what an impact Macy would have on our lives!  I wish we were making a big fuss over her and celebrating her "gotcha day", but instead I have just been thinking about all of the wonderful memories she gave us.

I remember being so excited and nervous on adoption day.  I was in love with Macy the instant I saw her picture and found out that she was going to be ours.  I had read so many books and done so much research online, but I was still worried about what we may be getting ourselves into.  It turns out all that worry was for nothing, Macy was perfect from the moment we laid eyes on her.  The truck carrying the hauler broke down on the way from Florida to Virginia so her arrival was delayed several hours.  I can't remember how many dogs came up on that haul, but we were the only first time adopters so we had a very personalized adoption with Debbie and Linda.  When the pups finally arrived, we waited as dog after dog came out of the hauler - Macy was the very last one to get unloaded!  We were all shocked at just how thin she was, but she was still so beautiful.

I sent this update to Debbie (the president of our adoption group at 9:03 pm on Macy's first day with us.  "Miss Macy has been a perfect angel! Since this is our first greyhound, I wasn't sure how she would do, but she has amazed me as how well she seems to be adjusting already :) She was adorable when we first turned on the TV and she also LOVES to look at herself in the mirror of a curio cabinet in the living room...too cute! We've had no accidents so far and she even seems to have quickly learned to go to the door to let us know when she's ready to go out. She has been drinking water and ate a big bowl of food (2 c kibble and 1 c rice) when we first got home with her which I was happy about. However, she did not want to eat dinner when we put it out - hopefully she'll have a good appetite tomorrow. We were shocked at just how skinny she was and I just hope that she can put on weight. Otherwise, she has just been a darling little girl and she has already captured my heart!"

Here's another one that I sent a month later.  It still rings true!  "I am absolutely in love with Macy. I really can't even put into words the bond I have with her and this incredible amount of happiness she has brought us.  Sometimes it brings tears (of joy) to my eyes just looking at her or thinking about how amazing she is! I am so glad that we decided to adopt and am so thankful to VAGA for selecting Macy for us - she is perfect...even with her goofy eating habits!"

There is no doubt that Macy changed our lives!  I thought we would have many more years together. She looked fragile, but she was the toughest one of the bunch!  I am still so grateful for the time we did have with her and for all the love we gave to each other.  Here's a video I put together with some of my favorite pictures of her.

Brings back memories of when we first got Stella. We also wondered what we got ourselves into. Seems so long ago. Now we wonder how we ever got along without them.

I think there's some conspiracy out there that all first hounds are perfect so that you're completely hooked. Macy was an absolutely beautiful girl! I don't think she ever took a bad picture!

It's funny how many things we forget, but the video memory of seeing our dogs for the first time ... I'll remember that on my death bed.

She was lovely.
