Cake Bake 2009

I rarely post non-greyhound related things, but this was just too cute not to share. My nephew, Bryan, is 7 years old and in Cub Scouts. Every year they have a "Cake Bake" and since my husband and I have a little cake experience (maybe one day I'll share some of our other masterpieces), my sister recruited us to help out. The cakes had to be designed around one of three themes: Scouting, America/Patriotic, and Picnics. We decided to go with picnic time!

I should add that my nephew had a really bad case of the flu for the last week and unfortunately had to be hospitalized this past Tuesday night to get an IV drip because he became so dehydrated. My sister said the thought of coming to our house this weekend was the only time he smiled all week :) Once he got fluid back in him, things began looking up. I am happy to report that he is on the mend and was able to participate in every step of making his first cake!

On Friday, we baked the cake and did some prep work.

On Saturday, we finished the prep and assembled the picnic!

"Frying chicken"...

Assembling a cheeseburger...

Piping the grass...

Bryan was very proud of the finished product and he really did help a lot!

Let me explain why this is so cute...it is 100% edible :) I have to admit that this was not our orignal idea...although we did improve upon a similar cake we found online. Anyway...the picnic blanket, plates, watermelon, lettuce, and cheese are all made from a yummy marshmallow fondant that my husband makes (colored for whatever we needed). The hamburger buns are Nilla Wafers. The hamburger is a piece of the chocolate cake. The chicken legs are caramel candies shaped and rolled in crushed graham crackers. The bacon is also made from flattened caramel candy. The tomato and pickle are fruit roll-ups. The ketchup, mustard, and grass are just icing, as are the grill marks on the bun. The cake won 1st Place at the Scouting event :)

Wow! I have no doubt that it won first prize, that cake looks amazing. Did it actually get eaten?- (it's such a work of art I wouldn't want to cut it!)
Is your husband's fondant recipe a highly guarded secret ? (I would so love to have it).

Alex - the recipe is no secret and it's very simple. A single batch is just 1 c. mini marshmallows firmly packed, 1 TB of water, and about 1 1/2 cups of confectioner's sugar. Add water to marshmallows and microwave for 20 secs. Then, slowly stir in sugar and knead until you get the right consistency (grease your hands first or it will be very sticky). Regular fondant always tastes gross. This is just a easy to work with and as long as you like marshmallows, it tastes good too! There are lots of similar recipes on the internet.
