Day 17: Donate to the SPCA

I implemented what I've been calling the "George Family Give Back Program" this holiday season because I wanted the 25 Days of Christmas to be more than just fun crafts and snacks.  Wreaths Across America was part of that, as was day 17...donating to our local animal shelter (and day 23, ringing the bell for The Salvation Army).

Donating to the SPCA was by far the girls' favorite give back idea I had, and honestly it ended up being one of their top picks for the whole month!  We went to Wal-Mart with the SPCA wish list in hand.  We got milk bones, rawhide bones, cat litter, canned cat food, blankets, toys, bleach, dish liquid, laundry detergent, paper towels, and more (plus I donated the rest of the box of 100 puppy pads we had from Woody since we only ended using maybe five of them because he was such an awesome pup when it came to house training!).  I told the kids our budget was around $100 and we ended up spending $99.35 before tax which was just over $104 after tax...pretty darn good since I wasn't adding anything up as we went along.  We drove straight from Wal-Mart to the SPCA and delivered the goods....happy kids, happy shelter employees, and happy animals....it was a win all around and something the kids were really proud of doing!  They loved picking out everything at the store and of course once we dropped the donations off we spent a little time playing with the kittens and taking a stroll through the dog section.

Chi Chi left wanting a cat and Lauren would have loved to bring home a big white dog!  However, we talked about it before hand and they knew we were not adopting, only donating and visiting, so they were very good and enjoyed the whole experience.  To my complete surprise there was a Greyhound/Nova Scotia Retriever mix (at least that's what we were told) in the shelter too!
